Mary had been married to Jack for 23 years, and together they had four children. Over the years, she dedicated herself entirely to caring for them, making sure their needs were always met. Yet, their marriage had slowly turned into a routine—one that no longer sparked excitement or joy.
Jack would come home from work, collapse onto the couch, and watch TV until dinner. Meanwhile, Mary was always busy, cooking dinner, washing laundry, caring for their youngest, and helping with homework. By the time she found a moment for herself late at night, she’d watch romantic movies and imagine herself as the leading lady, not just the woman in the background.
Mary had been dreaming of a date with Jack for some time, but it had been so long since they had shared anything like that. But when she looked in the mirror one day, she felt a pang of sadness. She no longer looked like the woman she had once been—the happy, youthful girl in her wedding photo.
She had changed. Her face showed the wear of years of sacrifice, and it was hard for her to recognize the young woman who had once radiated joy and love. But she shook off those thoughts and decided that she would change her reality.
The next day, when Jack returned home, she sat down with him at the dinner table.
“Jack, I was thinking… maybe we should go on a date again,” she said, her voice hopeful. “There’s a new café in the city center. Why don’t we try it out?”
Jack laughed, clearly surprised by her suggestion.
“A date? Why would we need to go on a date? Is today some special occasion?” he asked.
Mary shook her head.
“Well, we don’t need a special day for a date. We can make any day special,” she said with a warm smile.
But instead of being pleased by her suggestion, Jack grew angry.
“Look at yourself!” he yelled. “You look awful. I’m not going anywhere with you.”
Mary was hurt by his harsh words, especially because she looked this way after spending the entire day cleaning the house.
“I’ve just finished all the housework, that’s why I look like this,” she defended herself.
“Don’t be silly. You look like this every day now. You used to take care of yourself—doing your hair, dressing nicely. Now you look like an old woman. I don’t know when you let yourself go,” Jack said, his voice full of contempt.
Tears welled up in Mary’s eyes.
“Even when you cry, you look awful. Want to know the truth? I’m ashamed of you. I can’t take you on a date,” Jack snapped before storming out the door.
Jack went to visit his friend Samuel, asking if he wanted to join him for a drink at the bar. But Samuel immediately turned him down.
“Sorry, my friend. I have a date with my wife tonight. I’m taking her to that new café in the city center,” Samuel said with a smile.
Jack felt a twinge of irritation. His friend preferred to go out with his wife, rather than join him for a drink. Then he saw Samuel walking upstairs with his wife, who looked stunning in a dress, her face lit up with a smile as she held a bouquet of flowers.
“Sam, I found this bouquet on our table. Did you put it there?” she asked, kissing him on the cheek.
“Yes, surprise! And that’s not all…” he said, pulling a gift box from behind the door.
His wife opened the box, revealing a beautiful evening gown.
“Oh, Sam, it’s gorgeous! You’re the best husband ever! I’ll change quickly and wear this for our date,” she said, beaming with excitement before hurrying upstairs.
Jack was shocked by what he had just seen.
“Sam, your wife is beautiful, and you both look so in love. My wife always looks sad. Lately, she hardly ever smiles,” Jack said, feeling a sense of shame wash over him.
“When was the last time you asked Mary if she wanted to go on a date with you?” Samuel asked, looking at his friend with a knowing expression.
“I don’t remember… maybe two years ago?” Jack replied, clearly unaware.
“You asked her two years ago, and now you’re complaining that she doesn’t smile?!” Samuel said, giving his friend a playful slap on the back.
Samuel shook his head, then decided to give Jack some valuable advice.
“You know, my friend, I make every day special for my wife. She’s the light of our home. She deserves all my love and respect. She’s always been beautiful, but every day she puts in the effort to look even better—because she feels loved,” Samuel said with a knowing look.
Jack stood silently, absorbing his friend’s words.
It dawned on him that he had a responsibility to his wife, a responsibility he had been neglecting.
“When I take my wife on a date, I don’t do it because it’s a special occasion. I do it because I choose to make every day special. Try it, my friend. It can work wonders for your marriage,” Samuel suggested kindly.
Jack nodded, realizing that what Samuel said was exactly what Mary had been trying to tell him all along.
“Thank you, Samuel. Well, enjoy your date tonight. I think I’ll go home now.”
When Jack returned home, he had a gift for Mary.
“I’m sorry for hurting you with my words today. I was disrespectful, and you didn’t deserve that,” he said, handing her a gift box.
“Would you like to go on a date with me tomorrow? I’ve made a reservation at that beautiful restaurant in the city center…”
Mary looked at Jack in surprise.
She smiled the brightest smile he had seen in ages.
She opened the box and found a beautiful silver necklace inside.
“It’s beautiful, Jack. Thank you. I’d love to go on a date with you tomorrow,” she said, her eyes sparkling.
The next day, Jack watched in awe as Mary transformed before his eyes.
She looked stunning, and he was reminded that he had the most beautiful wife in the world. He was happy, and so was she.
From that day forward, both Jack and Mary made a conscious effort to work on their relationship.
They reignited the flame between them, and it didn’t just change their marriage—it also had a positive impact on their family life.
