Their experience sparked widespread attention and stirred conversations filled with surprise and curiosity. While some observers responded with sympathy, others judged their situation critically. However, once the media frenzy waned and headlines moved on, what became of this young family that once captivated global interest?

A Secret Kept From Parents

Reaching parenthood is a monumental life event, and for April and Nathan, it came with the distinctive challenge of their youthful ages. They first crossed paths as classmates at St Cenydd School in Caerphilly, South Wales, where their adolescent romance began. Unexpectedly, April became pregnant at just 13 years old.

She found out about her pregnancy the day before her 14th birthday, a revelation that shocked both families. April had kept her relationship with Nathan private, too embarrassed to share those intimate details with her own parents.

According to both April and Nathan, they did not use any contraception. After unsuccessfully trying it once, Nathan disliked the experience and decided against it.

Nathan’s parents, Julie and Ron—who was then a retired truck driver—initially reacted with anger toward their son.

“I used to tease him, calling him foolish. But what’s done is done, and now we welcome Jamie into our family. Turning our backs isn’t an option,” Ron expressed at the time.

April Webster: A Young Mother’s Reality

Once the initial shock passed, April’s parents rose to fully support their daughter and her boyfriend as they became parents so young. Maria, April’s mother then aged 36, explained, “It was a big surprise initially, but we left the final decision to April as to whether to continue the pregnancy.”

Jamie was born via cesarean section in November 2010, weighing 3.62 kg. Although his birth was complicated by an esophageal malformation that made feeding difficult, successful surgery followed. After spending eleven days hospitalized, Jamie was declared healthy and able to leave for home.

By the time British newspapers picked up their story, Jamie was already a month old and living with April at her parents’ house.

To provide a clearer picture, April shared a room with her 17-year-old sister Robyn, who helped care for Jamie by bottle-feeding him. This family dynamic was quite unique, with April facing the duties of motherhood under the same roof as her own parents.

Nathan, meanwhile, lived just a few kilometers away at his parents’ home.

Uncertainty Around Their Relationship

Despite the unconventional circumstances, April remained firmly committed to providing the best care for Jamie.

“Jamie wasn’t planned, but I will be an amazing mother to him. He’s perfect, and I’ll give him everything he needs,” April stated.

Back in 2010, it was unclear how the young couple would manage co-parenting their son.

  • Nathan wished to have Jamie on weekends.
  • April was open to caring for him five days a week.

Soon, confusion arose regarding the status of their relationship. April mentioned they were having a “time of reflection” and admitted uncertainty about whether their partnership would endure.

Where Are April and Nathan Now?

In 2014, April revealed she and Nathan were no longer together. “I left Nathan about three years ago. We don’t really keep in touch,” she shared. “I don’t want much contact with him. When I had Jamie, I hoped we’d stay together, but I have no regrets.”

Though she once planned to continue her education, April never completed her GCSEs, qualifications equivalent to high school leaving diplomas in the US. “I’m not attending school or working; I’m focused on raising Jamie, and everything is fine with him,” she said.

Thankfully, April has had unwavering support from her family and friends throughout her journey.

“My mother and sister love having Jamie around. It’s fun. He attends school in the morning, giving me time to relax. I might consider university and exams when Jamie is older. But I don’t plan on having another child anytime soon,” she explained.

Glancing through April’s social media today reveals just how much her life has blossomed since welcoming Jamie.

Now aged 28 and known as April Lianna, she proudly raises three children: Jamie Rhys, Rowan David, and Ava Lianne. She enjoys a fulfilling relationship with her partner Jake Jones, showcasing a positive new chapter in her life.

Nathan, too, appears to be thriving. In February 2023, he became engaged to his partner Samantha and has since established a family with several children. It is heartening to witness Nathan’s happiness and his personal growth on his own path.
