When My Husband’s New Love Found a Full-Time Roommate

Miguel and I shared seven years of marriage. From the moment we committed our lives to each other, I accepted living with my mother-in-law, Doña Carmen, a woman whose life was forever altered by a stroke. Half of her body was paralyzed, and she required continuous assistance with every meal and rest. At the start, I believed caring for her was straightforward: she was Miguel’s mother, and I, his wife, naturally took on the caregiving role.

What I hadn’t anticipated, however, was just how prolonged this duty would be—especially without support from the person who should have stood beside me the most: Miguel himself.

While Miguel left for work each morning, evenings found him absorbed by his phone. He frequently remarked, “You take better care of Mom than I ever do. If I try, she ends up worse off.” I never held any bitterness over his words.

I assumed this was the natural rhythm of marriage: the woman manages the household, while the man provides financially. Yet, reality unfolded differently when I discovered Miguel’s attention was divided elsewhere.

One day, a message caught my eye, reading, “I’m coming over again tonight. Being with you feels so much better than being home.” Neither anger nor tears followed; instead, I quietly questioned, “And your mother, the one you’ve ignored all these years?” Miguel remained silent, leaving me certain about his next step.

By the following day, he had moved out. His destination was no secret to me.

Facing Doña Carmen—the very woman who once criticized my eating habits and my rest, who branded me “unworthy” of being part of the family—I felt a wave of discouragement. Thoughts of abandoning everything swirled, but I reminded myself of the importance of preserving self-respect.

A week later, I contacted Miguel. “Are you available? I’m bringing your mother over so you can care for her now.”

With care, I gathered her medications, hospital documents, and an old medical notebook into a bag. That evening, after gently placing her in a wheelchair, I told her, “Mom, we’re going to stay at Miguel’s place for a few days. Sitting in the same spot can be quite dull.” She nodded, her eyes gleaming with childlike joy.

At the small apartment, I rang the doorbell. Miguel opened, his new companion behind him dressed in a silky nightgown and vibrant red lipstick. Calmly, I wheeled Doña Carmen inside, arranged her comfort with blankets and pillows, and set the medication nearby.

The Apartment Filled with Perfume and Silence: Confronting Neglect

The air was thick with perfume but carried a chilling quietness. Miguel stuttered, “What… what brings you here?”

I replied with a soft smile, “Remember, she’s your mother, and I am only the daughter-in-law. I have cared for her these past seven years—that time is enough.” Behind him, the woman holding a spoonful of untouched yogurt turned pale.

Stepping aside with composed resolve, as if completing a long-prepared mission, I said, “Everything you need is here: medical records, prescriptions, diapers, pads, and creams for her sores. The dosages are carefully noted in this notebook.”

I placed the notebook on the table and headed for the exit. Miguel’s voice rose in desperation, “Are you really abandoning my mother? That’s heartless!”

Without turning, I answered calmly and firmly:

“You have neglected her for seven years. How is that if not cruelty? I cared for her out of love, not obligation to you. Now, I am stepping away—not driven by revenge but by a completion of my duty as a compassionate human being.”

Facing the other woman, I met her gaze and smiled gently, saying, “If you truly care for him, then accept all aspects that come with loving someone.”

Then, I placed the house deed on the table. “This house is under my name alone. I am not taking any possessions. Miguel only took her clothes. Should you ever need financial help with Mom’s care, I remain willing to assist.”

I leaned over and tenderly stroked Doña Carmen’s hair one last time. “Behave well here, Mom. If you ever feel lonely, I will come to visit.”

She smiled, voice quivering with emotion, “Yes… come back to visit when you return home.”

I closed the door behind me, leaving behind a room scented with perfume and faint traces of massage oil. That night, I fell into a peaceful sleep, free from dreams. At dawn, I rose early, took my son for breakfast, and embraced the dawn of a new chapter—without sorrow or bitterness.
